A. Public Services in Europe - developments during EPSU congress period 2000 - 2004 There were significant developments in the role of public services in the Member States of the European Union since the 6th EPSU General Assembly in April 2000. Socially, the principles upon which public services are based continued to be eroded. Economically, the debate was between the budgetary constraints imposed on public services and their contribution as an economic operator. However, (...)

Gender Equality
Resolution R4
A. Introduction
Achieving gender equality at the workplace and in public policies is one of EPSU’s main priorities.
Around 35% of women in full-time employment in the EU work in the public sector as against 22% of men. Women, therefore, both as public service workers and users, are the first casualties of cuts on public services particularly in social services, health care, child and elderly care, and administration. Women are also the key agents in the interaction between (...)

At this stage, the focus of policymaking is no longer on accession but attention needs to shift to the question: what (...)

Emergency Resolution: The Directive on Services in the Internal Market
Europe has to be more than an Internal Market
Europe’s trade unions and citizens cannot accept that the Internal Market becomes the sole driver of European integration. Cross-border trade can deliver growth, employment, and cohesion, but only if works for people, and not against them. Solidarity has to take precedence over competition and Europe has to be more than an economic space. EPSU and the ETUC are increasingly frustrated at the way that “competitiveness” is the yardstick against (...)

To the 25 EU heads of State and Government Celebrate Social Europe in the Treaty! Europe’s citizens will thank you
The new European Constitution is the centrepiece of the next European council on June 17/18.
For the two years of negotiations and consultation that have brought us to this point, the one constant on which all European leaders agree, is that Europe must be brought closer to the citizen. A stronger social Europe is the path to this shared goal. The draft Constitutional treaty (...)
