PSI Global LRG Sector Workers’ Network Meeting

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

PSI is pleased to invite you to the PSI Local and Regional Government (LRG) Workers’ Network Meeting that will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 19 September 2016. The meeting will be followed by the EPSU Local and Regional Government Standing Committee on 20 September 2016, enabling PSI affiliates from other regions to take part as observers.

ACTIVITY OBJECTIVES

This meeting aims to:

  • Review and assess global developments and ongoing affiliate and PSI work in the Local and Regional Government Sector (LRG);
  • Identify common key global sectoral challenges and priorities, as well as good practices to share and disseminate;
  • Stepping stones towards a strong sectoral network of PSI LRG in line with PSI Durban Congress Resolution 34;
  • Review progress, input and update the LRG work plan for 2016-17 approved in the November 2015 EB and discuss LRG preparations for the PSI Congress;
  • Establish an ongoing global communication and consultation network for the global PSI LRG sector
  • Experience the different kinds of LRG sector regional organization and issues within PSI, starting with Europe. The next LRG Network meeting will be held in principle in conjunction with a CONTRAM meeting (Americas).

Participating affiliates are expected to:

  • Contribute and support PSI in building a Global LRG Network. Bring and share their expertise, ideas and proposals on challenges, priorities and good practices on relevant LRG issues, including:

     - Trade union rights and social dialogue for local public sector workers

     - Organizing and growth

     - Working conditions

     - Skill building for municipal workers

     - Privatization, outsourcing and public-private partnerships (PPPs), remunicipalization

     - Urban policy good practices and Habitat III process

     - Climate change anticipation and disaster preparedness

     - Impact of tax and trade policies on local government and local public services

     - Financing local public services

     - Migration, refugees and local public services

     - Digitalization and e-government
