EPSU in solidarity as Belgian Confederation FGTB calls General Strike for 7 October 2005

“General Strike before it is too late” is how the FGTB (the Belgian Socialist Trade Union Confederation) has addressed its membership this week. The Confederation has called for all 1.2 million workers to strike on 7 October 2005 to defend pension and pre-pension plans, for social security rights and for sustainable jobs for all. The call states that the Governmental pre-pension plans are a perfect example of unrealistic policy. The proposal aims to prolong working life without any reference to commensurate improvement of working conditions. The FGTB had been participating in tripartite negotiations from 29 September to 4 October but insufficient progress was made to call off the strike. The Strike is set to last for the full 24 hours on 7 October. For more info: www.fgtb.be
