Norway: public sector unions on strike

(30 May 2012) EPSU sends solidarity greetings to all the trade unions involved in the strike action in the Norwegian public sector.

The public sector wide strike began on Thursday 24 May after attempts at mediation over pay negotiations ended without a result. The unions involved now in the strike are coordinating their action and gradually increasing the number of workers coming out on strike.

At the centre of the dispute are the trade unions’ efforts to ensure that pay increases in the public sector are in line with those in the private sector. EPSU fully endorses this demand along with the other claims put by the unions on improved rights for temporary workers and increased payments for working unsocial hours.

EPSU General Secretary, Carola Fischbach-Pyttel, sent her greetings to the striking workers saying: “We wish every success to our colleagues in Norway. It is vital that public sector workers get the recognition they deserve for the crucial services they provide and a share of the economic success to which they have contributed.”
