Update on the Commission and water services
The European Commission has the clear intention to open the European Water Sector to competition. There are Commission speeches, leaked documents, Green and White Paper on Services of General Interest. The Commission has a Working Document ready to promote more competition. It is waiting for the New Commission to be installed to approve and publish it.
To a large extend the contents of what will be in that document are revealed in an article by a Commission civil servant (p.38, article of Alexander Gee) and which was endorsed by Commissioner Bolkestein in an interview with a Dutch Publication. While liberalisation of drinking water is not seen as realistic AT THIS STAGE the Commission wishes to promote competition in a number of other areas. Please read the article.
