EPSU demonstrates in Luxembourg for Social Europe!

(20 June 2011) Tomorrow the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) will be marching in the European demonstration in Luxembourg to protest against the European Commission plans for the Economic Governance and the Europact plus.

The demo will be heald as the European Finance Ministers meet in that city. On Thursday the European Parliament will vote this policy package and on Friday the Council will have the final showdown of the process with an agreement of the Europact plus at the highest level. EPSU will continue to mobilise alongside the European Trade Union Confederation against the current proposals.

The message of EPSU, together with the ETUC is clear: the EU needs to change route and choose a different economic governance. The austerity for all - as proposed by the European Commission and Council- will have terrible consequences for European workers and societies as we see in Greece, Portugal, Spain, Romania... In this battle, public services are on the front line, the European model is at stake.

EPSU believes that there is an alternative and also this week we will be mobilising for the Financial Transaction Tax on Wednesday, 22 June. This Global Day of Action for the FTT will see dozens of different actions so financial speculators and bankers start paying their share for the crisis. The following day, 23 June, we will remind to the world that our societies need Quality Public Services to develop societies in a fair and socially just way! We are and we will continue to be at the forefront of this struggle!

Our demands for tomorrow will continue to be:

The respect to collective bargaining, a European FTT now! Eurobonds to stop the financial speculations against the Eurozone countries. A new industrial policy to start a just transition and Quality Public Services for all.
