Police descend on offices of PSI affiliate in Moldova

PSI informed us of a highly disturbing situation in Moldova concerning the trade union federation of public services (SINDASP). On April 29th, 2004, two truckloads of armed police entered the trade union building in Kishinev, surrounded the offices of SINDASP and finally sealed the office of the President of the union, Victor Molosag. The justification for police intervention was based on a court decision taken at the Buiucani sector courts, in Kishinev, at a closed session, and after the police had already intervened. The court apparently claimed that the President was illegally occupying the union position and had failed to hand over union papers and property to a minority faction. There have been previous well-documented attempts to intimidate the SINDASP trade union leaders. This situation, in the opinion of the Public Services International constitutes a clear violation of the ILO Conventions 87 and 98 on the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining. EPSU has sent a letter of protest to the Moldovan government and European authorities.
