Portuguese national strike in Public Administration 23 January

On 23 January 2004, the Portuguese public services trade unions held a National Strike in Public Administration. The aim of the strike was to secure:
* real negotiations;
* quality public services;
* real reform of the public service,

and to oppose:

* the change in the retirement status;
* the privatization of essentials state services.

The strike intends to send a message to the Portuguese government that workers will not only not accept this blatant disregard of their legal right to be involved in negotiations, but also that public services deserve to be protected in a responsible fashion.
