“Workshop on Future Skill Needs”

22-23 May 2008
CEDEFOP’s premises, Europe 123, 57001- Thessaloniki, Greece

New Skill needs is one of the main items on the agenda of the European Social Partners Work Programme of the Hospital Sector. At the Social Dialogue working group meetings on new skill needs, representatives from EPSU and HOSPEEM looked at developments and challenges in relation to job roles, training requirements, workers’ mobility and work organisation in the hospital sector. It was concluded that it would be useful to set up, in cooperation with the European Agency on Vocational Training, Cedefop a workshop in order to study jointly with different experts the developments with regard to new skill needs in the hospital sector. This workshop will take place on 22 and 23 May 2008 in Thessaloniki.

The purpose of the workshop is:

*  To increase the knowledge about trends and requirements for skills and occupations

*  To enhance evidence-based policy-making at the national and European level

*  To identify the key trends and future skill needs

*  To raise awareness of the connection between trends and requirements for skills and mobility trends

An important part of the workshop is reserved for presentations and debates concerning social partner experiences and ideas. EPSU and HOSPEEM will then have the opportunity to jointly present different case studies on the subjects of technology and ICT, management of health care and training and education. In order to give input to the debate, we would like to ask you to inform us about joint experiences and practices these three areas by filling in the template on new skill needs which is attached to this invitation. Please inform us about any joint initiatives by the 24th of April 2008. The social partners with the most interesting and/or useful cases will be requested to give a presentation at the workshop. EPSU and HOSPEEM are expected to give two joint presentations per subject area.

All EPSU members of the Social Dialogue Working Group on New Skill Needs are invited to participate at this meeting. As we expect that a few seats will be available to other EPSU-representatives, we would like to request those trade-unionists, who are also interested in taking part in this meeting to contact the EPSU Secretariat as soon as possible. Preference will go to representatives who are in a position to present a joint case study with the hospital sector employers at the meeting.

Please fill in the attached participation form as soon as possible but at the latest by 18 April 2008. EPSU members of the Social Dialogue working Group on New Skill needs might also receive an invitation from CEDEFOP. Registration for this meeting, however, can only take place through the EPSU-secretariat.

Although the European Commission will not provide reimbursement for travelling and accommodation, it has been decided that in this exceptional case all EPSU-participants to the meeting will be able to request financial assistance from EPSU for the costs related to the participation. The reimbursement procedure will be published on the web next week and sent to all the participants. Participants are requested to arrange their own travel, accommodation and transport from and to the airport Attached you will find a list of hotels in Thessaloniki. Unfortunately, it was not possible to arrange and finance interpretation for the meeting. The meeting will therefore be held in English only. We would like to offer you our sincere apologies for this inconvenience.
