EPSU FACT SHEET 2

Prison Action day 28 February 2008

The CONSEQUENCES of Prison Overcrowding in the EU

  1. Greater risks of the spread of infectious diseases for prisoners and for prison staff
  2. Greater risk of bullying, violence and suicides in prisons
  3. Increased stress and isolation of prison staff
  4. Prison Officers reduced to role of ‘enforcer’ as space for rehabilitation programmes cut
  5. High turnover of healthcare staff. Lack of experience means more security risks and more health risks
  6. Increased risk as ‘brutalised prisoners’ return to society

Interesting fact! In Scotland, the life expectancy of prison guards is 58 years-old, 15 years below the national average.
