(13 February, 2008, Rome) CGIL-FP, the Italian affiliate of EPSU has today announced that they will hold a conference on prison conditions in Italy. The conference, which will take place on 28 February in Rome, is set to coincide with a series of actions throughout Europe, to mark the first ‘EU Prison Action Day’. The Action day is designed to highlight the growing crisis of overcrowding in European prisons. In Italy, prison capacity is currently at 130% (source: Council of Europe). In particular, EPSU wishes to draw attention to the worsening working conditions faced by Prison staff. “Prison Officers are becoming increasingly at risk from dangerous infections and violence from prisoners. As working conditions worsen, so prison officers become more and more isolated in their work - physically and emotionally”, said EPSU Prison Spokesperson, Nadja Salson. A delegation from CGIL-FP will also take part in the main event of the action day, which is a rally in Brussels outside the meeting of EU Justice Ministers.
