Slovenian unions drive public service petition forward

(10 September 2007) The Slovenian trade unions and their confederations are committed to contine the collection of signatures for the ETUC petition for public services. EPSU Deputy General Secretary met with the leadership of the unions and presidents of the Confederations. "It is very encouraging the Slovenian unions keep up the drive and have put public service issues high on the agenda, The unions stand between the government and the dismantling of public services and the people appreciate this"/ A large number of signatures is collectied and even in absolute numbers more then in more populous countries.The ETUC petition accompanied other campaigns to defend public services such as against the reform and privatisation of the health care clinics.

The unions are preparing actions as the government is not fullfilling its obligations regarding agreements that have been concluded. The Slovenian government is faced with industrial action and including strike action under the Slovenian Presidency which will start in January 2008. The unions discussed with EPSU the possibilities for supportive action.

A number of affiliated and non-affiliated unions from health and social services, energy, nurses and professional staff, firefighters and municipal services discussed the ongoing activities in EPSU and PSI, the sectoral social dialogue and the forth-coming Presidency.
