Unions approve waste hierarchy and support ambitious targets of European Parliament

The unions discussed the European Commission proposal for a revision of the Waste Directive and the amendments of the European Parliament. The so-called waste hierarchy was approved as well as the targets of the European Parliament to increase prevention, re-use and recycling. Incineration and disposal should be substantially reduced. EPSU welcomes the role for stakeholders and local and regional government. The risks for public-private partnerships were underlined. The absence of a social dimension is criticised and EPSU requests an impact assessment as to determine the extend of the positive employment effects of the Parliament’s proposals we expect.
