Carola Fischbach-Pyttel, General Secretary of the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) will be in Dublin on Thursday 15th March for the Irish launch of EPSU’s European Campaign for Quality Public Services.

The launch takes place at 11.00am in IMPACT head office, Nerney’s Court, (off Temple Street), Dublin 1. The media are invited to attend.

Speakers will include:

* Carola Fischbach-Pyttel, EPSU General Secretary

* David Begg, ICTU General Secretary

* Shay Cody, IMPACT Deputy General Secretary

The trade union campaign is urging citizens to sign a petition calling on the European Commission to legislate to protect public services. Unions say the lack of a clear EU legal framework for public services encourages privatisation, regardless of national policies or objectives, because EU internal market laws are the only regulations governing public service contracts. They believe an EU directive would prevent internal market rules determining the future of services as diverse as health and social services, education and water.

EPSU represents over 200 trade unions with a combined membership of over 8 million in 37 countries. The Campaign is also supported by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), the European Socialists’ grouping of MEPs, and the European Green Party.
