Is the Commission vandalising the electricity and gas sector ?

The European Commission published its energy package 10 January 2007. While many elements are worthwhile, the emphasis on the continuation of the internal market and especially ownership unbundling and the abolishment of regulated rates has caused concern. In a new paper for EPSU Steve Thomas, Professor University of Greenwich University UK, analysis the proposals of the Commission and critises absence of critical reflection on the results of the internal market. The costs of competition which become more noticeable are ignored and glossed over.

A further paper gives an overview of the process of concentration in the energy sector.
