EPSU unions build European protest to oppose ownership unbundling of transmission and distribution networks

Verdi organised the big energy demonstration to protest the proposals of the European Commission on ownership unbundling. More than 20000 workers marched the streets of the German capital Berlin. Several speakers pointed out the dangerous of forced ownership unbundling for employment, electricity prices and investment as well as local municipal control over energy.

Erhard Ott, member of the board of Verdi addressed the angry workers. He welcomed the delegations of several European countries including EPSU unions from France (CGT-FNME), Hungary (VdSzSz) and Slovenia (SDE). The demonstration is part of European wide protest of energy workers. EPSU Deputy General Secretary comments: Energy workers are standing up to liberalisation and the impact it has on workers, families and their communities. The demonstration took place 7 February 2007.
