Sztrájk in Hungarian energy: EPSU warns for disruption as Hungarian government shuns compromise

(8 February 2007): action a success - read the preliminary agreement

(6 February 2007) Update: Hungarian strike in electricity a success. The two hour strike of EPSU affilaite VdSzSz and other unions is a big success. Participation in the strike varies between 65 and 95% of workers according to the work place. Many non-unionised workers have joined the action. Production has been reduced with 200-300 MW. A big achievement for our Hungarian colleagues that sends a powerful message to the government.

Last minute attempts to reach compromise and avert a strike that will affect power supplies in Hungary appeared to have failed as a divided Hungarian government was not capable of agreeing with the unions. The strike will now take place, 6 February for 2 hours and again 8 February for 8 hours. EPSU has alerted the unions in the neighboring countries and monitor power production and power flows. It has called on the unions to respect the commitment to Transnational Solidarity for an Integrated Industry (see text available in several European languages)

EPSU affiliated unions have tried to persuade the Prime Minister to intervene in the chaos caused by his Minister and have sent messages of solidarity to the unions. Workers from France and Slovenia have advised the union on the strike action and the mesures to protect citizens and public institutions such as hospitals and schools.
