Portuguese workers say yes to EU law for public services
EPSU Portuguese affiliates stage major public service campaign event
(28 November, 2006) Garantir Servicos Publicos de Qualidade para todos! -Guaranteeing quality public services for all !
This was the message of the four public service unions from Portugal who joined forces to call for an EU law on public services as a counterbalance to the EU. The significance of STAL, STE, SINTAP and SINDEL, all EPSU affiliates, sharing a platform together, cannot be underestimated. Over 300 trade union activists from every region in Portugal, and members of the Portuguese press, witnessed speaker after speaker call for the legislative initiative.
The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), in conjunction with European political parties and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) have launched a European-Wide campaign calling for a legal framework for public services. Addressing the event, campaign coordinator Brian Synnott stated that the European Commissions repeated stalling on the proposal initiative amounted to ‘legislative abdication’.
The Unions adopted a Manifesto to underpin the campaign. EPSU General Secretary Carola Fischbach-Pyttel congratulated the Portuguese affiliates stating that; “this event sets the bar high for the SGI campaign and most importantly recognized that the only way to impact on EU issues is through genuine cooperation”.
The event was attended by Members of the European Parliament.
