Norwegian energy sector strike - EPSU affiliates take stand on local bargaining role

(5 July, Brussels) EPSU has sent solidarity greetings to its affiliates in Norway, EL&IT and Fagforbundet, whose members in the energy sector have been on strike since 21 June. The unions were trying to negotiate improvements to the new collective agreement for 2006-2008 but the employers rejected a number of key demands, prompting the call for strike action. The unions are calling for a role in local bargaining, better protection against social dumping and improvements to conditions when having to travel for work. The local bargaining issue is central and the unions reject the idea that employers should have absolute control over which employees get a pay increase. EPSU believes that the unions are taking an important stand on an issue that is affecting many other affiliates around Europe and wishes them every success in the action.
