Momentum for EU recognition of public services builds after Services Vote

(23 February, 2006) As part of the follow up and assessment of the European Parliament Services Directive vote, the focus continues to fall on Public Services. The acknowledgement that the next six month period will be essential for public services was underlined by recent press coverage. Agence Europe, the daily EU news bulletin, gave prominence to the calls for a legal framework on services of general interest. In their story (attached) they highlight the fact that both public services workers and employers are calling for an EU legal instrument to protect public services. Although EPSU and the Public Service Employers CEEP, sent their reactions separately, the blending of the message by Agence shows that there is a broad consensus that a framework for public services at the EU level is now essential. Most encouragingly both EPSU and CEEP share the perspective that this approach is what is best for users of public services.
