EU’s energy dependency: leadership utilities committee meets in Stockholm
The events involving Gazprom, Ukraine and Moldova demonstrate the importance for the European Union of considering European energy policy. The EU is dependent on external sources of fuels and it is a situation that needs to be addressed urgently.
It underlines the importance for the European trade unions to work together and develop contacts with each other beyond the borders of the EU, underlined the meeting of the President and Vice-Presidents of the Standing Committee Public Utilities. They were meeting in Stockholm to evaluate the energy conference and energy demonstration, prepare for the Standing committee in May, consider mobilisation for the ETUC demonstration in Strasbourg and discuss the work programme for 2006. This includes the possible actions for World Water Day, 22 March, activities in waste and a full agenda on energy with further activities foreseen around the internal market for electricity and gas (also a priority of the Austrian Presidency) and the forthcoming Green Paper on European energy policy.
The meeting gave its support to the work of the trade unions in South East Europe for a social dimension to the energy community. It welcomed the progress made, and the endorsement of the social dimension by the Ministerial Council in Sofia, 9 December.
